2046 VISION OF THE FUTURE
Ngāi Tahu Country, Sumner / Redcliffs, Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand

BY SARAH MAYER

The morning is cold and the air is bright with salt and sea spray. I am cycling the path from Sumner to Redcliffs on Ngāi Tahu Country, the estuary shimmering to my right, wild dunes between me and the ocean beyond. To my left, pohutukawa and cabbage trees and native flax press against the base of the cliffs. Ahead, the path stretches toward the snow-capped Southern Alps, sharp and clear against a deep, crisp autumn blue. The air is cold but the sunshine is warm, warm enough for just a sweater. I can smell the sea spray, the trees, the sand.

On the road beside the path, a silent futuristic gondola glides without sound, full of people enjoying their time, talking, reading, crocheting. This is how they get to town. Many cyclists move ahead of me in easy, organised flow. A cafe on the roadside has bikes stacked outside, people at tables in the morning sun, long conversations already underway. On the beach below, a large black pig walks calmly beside its owner along the pale sand. Both of them taking their time.

Surprisingly little has changed in the landscape itself, more trees, more native plantings, the dunes restored, birds and insects returned. What has changed is the system underneath it all, and the mindset beneath that. People come to work because they want to, not because they have to. We only work for ourselves and the people and Nature around us. Most time is spent on living: on creating, on community, on movement, long cafe conversations, beach yoga, crocheting on the gondola into town.

No one is in a rush. No one has to be somewhere at a specific time.

On the news today: a new exhibition about Nature and science has opened. There are tacos at the opening.

This world no longer distracts from what is truly worth living. We collectively focus on creating and being good.

The mountains are sharp and clear in the cold morning air. That, I think, as I cycle on, is everything.

PROMPT: A crisp and hazy autumn morning looking over a coastal bike path between Sumner and Redcliffs, Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand, 2046. Cold autumn morning light, hazy dappled bokeh. The path stretches ahead toward the snow-capped Southern Alps on the horizon, sharp and bright against a deep blue autumn sky. Wild dunes and the Avon-Heathcote Estuary shimmer in the cold morning light, the ocean beyond. Pohutukawa, cabbage trees and native flax line the base of the cliffs. Cyclists ride away from view ahead on the path in easy organised flow, their figures small in the distance. Below, a large black pig walks calmly. A roadside cafe has bikes stacked outside, people at tables in the morning sun. The air is cold and salt-bright. Cinematic photorealism, high dynamic range, ultra-realistic, 8K detail, a touch of film grain.
